If you are a nurse in Minnesota, you must maintain your license to practice legally. While some of the requirements are pretty standard, others may not be as familiar to those who haven’t dealt with the licensing process before. It can be tough to keep up with the ever-changing requirements for nurses’ continuing education units (CEUs). The Minnesota Board of Nursing is one authority that sets CEU requirements, and its website is an excellent resource for keeping up with the latest changes. Here are some highlights of the Minnesota Board of Nursing CEU Requirements.

About Minnesota Board of Nursing Board

The Minnesota Board of Nursing (MN BON) is a branch of state government that is responsible for regulating and licensing Registered Nurses (RNs) and Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs). Minnesota Board of Nursing is the regulatory body for health care practitioners as well as respiratory therapists, sonographers, dietitians, dental hygienists, radiologic technologists, occupational therapists, and physical therapists. To renew your license with MN BON, you must complete continuing education hours.

CEU Hours Required

Minnesota state law requires registered nurses (RNs) and advanced practice registered nurses (APRNs) to earn a minimum number of CEUs each year. For RNs, this is 15 contact hours per renewal period, while APRNs must complete 30 contact hours. The Board of Nursing provides an online tool that helps nurses track their CEUs and stay up-to-date with the requirements.

In addition to completing the required number of contact hours, RNs and APRNs must also meet specific types of activities to receive credit for their CEUs. For example, one requirement is that nurses earn one contact hour for each renewal period through coursework or continuing education activities that the Board approves of Nursing. Other types of CEUs include attending seminars, conferences, and workshops.

These hours are defined by law in Minn. Statutes: 147B.02 Subd. 4(c), but may vary depending on what type of practitioner. There are three categories of licenses for RNs and LPNs, active, inactive, or retired, and each category needs to complete specific hours during each renewal cycle.

Does the MN Board of Nursing accept ANCC credits?
The MN Board of Nursing does accept ANCC credits for CEU purposes. In general, the Board of Nursing will accept contact hours earned through various approved providers and certifying bodies, including ANCC. However, you should always check the website or contact the Board directly to confirm which types of credits are accepted for your specific situation. If you’re taking a program offered through ANCC, make sure to obtain your certificate of completion from the sponsoring institution (not from ANCC). The MN Board of Nursing does not accept certifications offered directly through ANCC for MN nurses.

According to Minnesota law, you must complete 30 contact hours every two years to renew your license as a nurse. If you have at least one year of experience as a nurse but are new to practising in Minnesota, you only need 15 contact hours. However, once you’ve been registered in Minnesota for at least five years, it’s time to get serious about earning those 30 contact hours every two years; under that schedule, you need 60 contact hours per decade. If you haven’t renewed your license in more than ten years, you’ll need to earn 90 contact hours.

The good news is that all of these credits count toward your total—whether they’re related to nursing or not! For example, if you take an art class and earn three college credits, those three credits will count toward your requirement even though they don’t apply specifically to nursing.

When can I renew my MN nursing license?
The renewal period for MN nursing licenses typically runs from January 1 to December 31 each year. However, you should always check the Board website or contact your local licensing office directly to confirm the exact dates for your specific situation. You will typically receive a notification about renewing your license at least 3-4 months before it expires.

If you need to take a renewal exam, you have up to 5 days after your expiration date to complete it. If you do not pass, try again! You can attempt to retake your exam every ten days for four attempts total; if you still fail it after that point, you will need to go through the application process again to obtain another licensure date for renewal.

No matter when or how many times you retake an exam, there is no additional cost associated with doing so! It is also important to note that you must notify the Board immediately if you change employers, move from one board district to another, or even switch hospitals within your current district (as long as it’s still within Minnesota).
