How to Renew the Certified Nursing Assistant Certificate in California?

To maintain an active CNA license, the CNA certificates are required to renew every two years. Certified Nursing Assistants can renew their CNA certificate any time during the two years from when the date expires on their certificate. On the expiry of the CNA Certificates, the certified Nursing Assistants must complete the below steps to renew it.

  1. The CNA must have previously obtained and maintained a criminal clearance on their record in the fields of CNA, HHA, Intermediate Care Facility developmentally disabled (ICF-DD), DD Habilitative and DD Nursing, and a criminal clearance has been granted.

2.) CNA must have offered nursing or related services in a place for residents in exchange for reimbursement (under the guidance of an accredited health professional) in the most recent period of certification.

3.) CNA must have obtained and submitted documents for 40 (48) minutes of in-service CEUs/Training within their last certification cycle. The applicant must complete at least 12 hours out of the 48 hours within the two years certification period. The CNA can obtain a maximum of 24 hours from forty-eight hours by completing a CDPH-approved online training program listed on the official website. Those who cannot fulfill renewing requirements and whose certificate hasn’t expired for more than two (2) years can reactivate the certificate by passing the Competency Evaluation test.
